Types of Dentures

Today’s patients enjoy the choice of a variety of dentures, all custom made using advanced materials that closely mimic the unique appearance of your smile. The use of dental implants provides a permanent, stable result that will ultimately feel like you have your natural teeth back.

  • Removable full denture: a removable denture will be fitted to the contours of your gums and will require the use of an adhesive to hold in place.
  • Partial denture: similar to a dental bridge, a partial denture will replace several consecutive lost teeth. Partials can be removable or secured by dental implants.
  • Implant denture: implant dentures can be secured to several dental implants spaced throughout the jaw. There are several ways to secure the denture, depending on your dental health condition and aesthetic goals. Implants can secure a full or partial denture.

Dentures & Partials What to Expect

The process for placing a denture will begin with a consultation and evaluation of your dental health. Dr. Robin or Dr. Carole Thoman will perform a comprehensive exam and use digital diagnostics to analyze the overall condition of your oral structure. We will also take the time to discuss your specific needs and goals for the appearance of your new smile. We will present all suitable treatment options for you to consider and create a personalized treatment plan, outlining what you can expect along the way.

In some cases, there is a need for a tooth extraction(s), periodontal treatments or bone grafting prior to the placement of a denture or implant secured denture. Your treatment plan will be designed to establish a healthy oral foundation and a stable, new smile.

If we are placing dental implants to secure a denture, hybrid denture or partial we will surgically place the posts and allow several months healing time before moving to the next phase of treatment. Dr. Robin Thoman has advanced training in implant dentistry and has helped many patients enjoy a stable, secure smile using dental implants as part of their tooth replacement treatment plan.

Once the posts have healed in the jaw bone, or to begin the process of placing a removable denture, we will take dental impressions in our office. In most cases, a temporary denture is placed to allow the gum tissue to adapt before taking a new set of impressions and ordering a final restoration.

The final denture will be placed or permanently secured to implants at your last visit. We will go over how to care for your new denture at home to ensure the best possible result and a lasting smile.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures are designed to last up to 10 years but do require regular dental care and good oral hygiene habits to maintain. At routine visits, we will look for any signs of damage to the appliance and will monitor your gums and jaw bone structure as these can change over time.
