Dental Crowns An Overview

Dental crowns are one of the most common procedures in our Indianapolis dental practice. Crowns can serve a range of purposes in the long-term maintenance of a healthy smile. From tooth decay to addressing minor cosmetic concerns, dental crowns are an effective, lasting solution to many concerns regarding the function, health, and aesthetics of your smile.

Drs. Carole and Robin Thoman place beautiful, ceramic and porcelain crowns at Paradox Dental in Indianapolis. Customized to the color and appearance of a patient’s smile, a dental crown can restore, repair or enhance with lasting results.

A dental crown may also be placed to support other dental treatments:

  • After a root canal
  • To support a dental bridge
  • Final restoration for a single tooth implant

Inlays and Onlays

Also known as partial crowns, inlays and onlays are often recommended by Drs. Robin and Carole Thoman to address large areas of decay or damage with the most stable result. Using ceramic or porcelain materials, an inlay or onlay is a custom restoration that will be placed between or over the cusps of a larger tooth, providing natural aesthetics and long-term durability.

Inlays and onlays can provide the best result when a tooth is considered to be severely compromised and can often last longer than a traditional filling.

Dental Crowns What to Expect

The process for placing a dental crown or partial crown will require 2 visits to our office to complete. The first step is to prepare the affected tooth by removing any decay and enough tooth structure to place the crown securely.

We typically use a local anesthetic to numb the area, but we offer the option of dental sedation for anxious patients.

Once the tooth is prepared, dental impressions are taken which are sent to a dental lab where the new crown will be made to your unique specifications. A temporary crown will be placed in most cases to restore normal function while the new one is being made.

At the second visit, we will remove the temporary and place the final restoration. Before securing permanently into place, we will make adjustments as needed to ensure a comfortable bite.

A dental crown can be cared for like a natural tooth. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental care will help you to avoid additional problems or the loss of the crown.
